A. Defining psychological disorders –
Syndrome marked my significant disturbance in either our behaviors emotions or thinking.
Defining psychological disorders – dysfunction
problems with daily living. Those who have a lot of dysfunctions can’t do
many of the activities that we might think are appropriate for that age. Ex having
dementia you forget how to hygiene and brush your teeth.
Defining psychological disorders – distress
presence of negative emotions.
Biopsychosocial model of causes - diathesis-stress model
Diathesis(internal)Stress(external): Considers biological(genes) psychological(trauma)
and social factors(expectations) and their interactions in understanding health and illness.
Emphasizes that mind and the body are inseparable. Ex neg amotions can attribute to physical illness

Phobic disorders-Phobia
an anxiety disorder marked by a persistent irrational fear and avoidance of specific object, activity, or situation. Heights, dogs…
Phobic disorders-Social anxiety:
Marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situation
Panic Disorder:
anxiety disorder marked by unpredictable minutes long episodes of intense dread in which a person may experience terror, chest pain, choking or other frightening sensations
Agoraphobia:
fear or avoidance of public situations in which escape might be difficult.
Ex elevator
- Generalized anxiety disorder
an anxiety disorder in which a person is continually
tense, marked by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for six months or more. Worry often and are jitter on edge and sleep deprived. May leak through
furrowed brows twitching eyelids trembling or fidgeting.
