Memory Exam 3 Flashcards
Encoding failure (absentmindedness)
Because we weren’t paying attention when we were leaning that material it doesn’t go to our long-term memory. Ex when talking to someone new, you forget what they are saying because we are focusing on their face instead).
Storage decay (transience) – proactive & retroactive interference
interference (Forgetting. When we forget due to the passage of time).
Proactive
(when older learning interferes with the retention or recall of new information. Old disrupt new).
Retroactive
(when new information disrupts the recall of old information
Retrieval failure (blocking)
(Temporary failure to retrieve. In that moment you can’t remember, but an hour later it pops in your head.)
Reconsolidation
A process in which previously stored memories, when retrieved are potentially altered before being stored again. Memories can possibly change over time.
Source amnesia:
Faulty memory for how, or where information was learned or imagined. Remembering something incorrectly. Thinking not something you imagined actually happened.
Misinformation effects
When misleading information has corrupted one’s memory of an event. people may misremember when exposed to misleading information, despite feeling confident. yield sign becomes a stop sign for ex.
False memories:
: we easily remember the gist than the words themselves. Candy sugar, honey, and taste; we would falsely remember a not presented similar word such as sweet.
