Personality part 2 Flashcards
Psychodynamic Theories – ex: Freud
A. Defense mechanisms –
The unconscious is supposed to say I can’t look at the world like it is let me tweak it a little
bit. We distort the reality to a certain degree to manage the amount of our anxiety.
Repression
most fundamental mechanism Freud believe, when you push the disruptive
thought the witch in the unconscious, you make it not come to the surface. Keep it in the
unconscious. We shut it down we are not aware of it; it leaks a little bit. Overusing
repression produces psychological issue since we are shoving everything into the
unconscious. Having a little is fine but too much becomes uncontrollable.
Psychosexual stages
Energy involves in the id centers itself in different body parts.
. Phallic stage (3-6 yrs) & Oedipal complex
All gender went through this stage. Freud believed both boys and girl go through the
oedipal complex. Erotic attraction to opposite sex and feeling hatred towards same
sex is the oedipal complex. Forms the begging of a childs superego taking the ideas of
your culture. How we fix it; The best substitute is their friend or someone similar.
Fixation
When a person doesn’t resolve a psychosexual problem correctly. Lingering focus of id
energy at an early psychosexual state due to unresolved. actin a certain way under stress
because you never successfully got through the stage.
Those with phallic character will never be comfortable with healthy sexuality or will over
do it.
Problems with Freudian theory
They can’t be tested, some of his theories could not be falsified. Their claim are non
scientific they cant be falsified. You can prove whatever you want if you are committed
to Freudian theory.
A good hypothesis is capable of falsification, which is stating a potential outcome in a clear
way that can be supportive or not supportive. You have to be able wo to be wrong you
could have a false or a no outcome.
Humanistic Theories:
They focus on potential growth of people. Very optimistic theories
involved growth.
A. Maslow – hierarchy of needs
Maslow thought that humans have a set of motivations or needs, ranging from the most
basic, food sleep. Social needs trying to belong, and then the need to fulfill our unique
potential. If we have enough food shelter and feeling like we belong, if we have all this
met, we will be motivated to try and reach our ultimate potential.
Self-actualization:
desire to fulfill our unique potential. We all want to do that but first we
have to not be concerned with our security needs but eventually we all work t the top.
Rogers – need for self-actualization & need for positive regard
Emphasized that humans are concerned with these two needs,
Self actualization
: we all have an inborn tendency to want to fulfill our unique potential. Reach
anything they can.
Need for positive regard:
We want to feel valued by others.
Unconditioned positive regard s
d shown by parents and caregivers early on. Showing them
that have value no matter how they act they have self-value they have worth.
Conditional
you are only valuable if you do this or that. Getting this much money,
