Transcription and RNA Processing Flashcards
Central Dogma
DNA- (transcription)- RNA -(translation) - proteins
Eukaryotic Polymerases
I: rRNA
II: mRNA
III: tRNA
Prokaryotic Polymerase
RNA I: makes all 3 kinds of RNA
Eukaryotic Promoters
Enhancer, CAAT box, GC box, TATA box (-25), Initiator (+1), Downstream promotor element (+25)
Prokaryotic Initiation and elongation
RNA polymerase, bound to sigma factor, initiates, elongates, and then terminates by rho terminators
Eukaryotic Initiation
TFIID binds TATA box
recruits TF, RNA POL II, mediator
form basal transcrtiption apparatus
pre mRNA processing
5’ capping
3’ polyA tailing
RNA splicing (require consensus sequences)
Problems with splice site leads to cancers, dementia, epilepsy, Marfan, Gaucher, thalassemias (hereditary anemias, problem with Hb bc of splicing)
post translational processing
methylation, etc.
