Topic 2 The Respiratory System: Lungs Flashcards
1
Q
- Made of two sub-portions: left and right
- Membranous covers: pleurae
- 2 pleura layers: visceral and parietal pleura, space between is intrapleural space
A
Lungs
2
Q
- Smaller
- 2 lobes
A
Left Lung
3
Q
- Larger
- 3 lobes
A
Right Lung
4
Q
- Smaller to accommodate heart: on left side of chest
A
Left Lobe
5
Q
- Lines surface of lungs
A
Visceral Pleura
6
Q
- Lines inside of chest cavity
A
Parietal Pleura
7
Q
- Negative (lower) pressure relative to atmosphere
- When stabbed: air rushes causing lung to collapse
a. Pressure of this decreases when inhale: as diaphragm contracts, lung cavity opens up and this increase in volume equates to decrease in pressure - As pressure increases, volume decreases
- Inside lungs: as we inhale, volume of lungs expands as diaphragm drops: this creates negative pressure relative to atmosphere
A
Intrapleural Space
8
Q
- Diaphragm rises -> volume in lungs decreases -> pressure inside lungs increases -> air rushes out
A
Events during Exhale
