Tissue Flashcards
Epithelial
Tissue which provides protection, absorption and secretion
Give an example of epithelial tissue
Squamous epithelium of the skin
Connective
Tissue consisting of fibroblasts, fibres and glycosminoglycan matrix
Give an example of connective tissue
Bone and cartilage
Muscle
Tissue which undergoes contraction and relaxation
Give an example of muscle tissue
Skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle
Nervous
Tissue that receives and responds to stimuli from the environment and from within the body
Give and example of nervous tissue
Brain, spinal chord, peripheral nerves
Simple squamous epithelial
Outer layer of cells. Composed of a single sheet of very thin, flat cells.
Where can simple squamous epithelial tissue be found?
In areas where diffusion occurs. Eg. Alveoli of lungs, lining of blood vessels, glomerular capsule
Simple cuboidal epithelium
Cells have a square appearance
Where can simple cuboidal epithelium be found?
Lining many of the glands and their ducts, also lining parts of the kidney tubules
Simple columnar epithelium
Cells are tall and rectangular
Where can simple columnar epithelium be found?
Lining the intestine, allowing the absorption of soluble food materials
Ciliated epithelium
Cells are usually columnar in shape. Cilia or elongated structures, which move, are present on the free surface of the cell
Where can ciliated epithelium be found?
Lining tubes and cavities where materials must be moved. Eg respiratory tract, oviducts
Stratified Epithelium
Layers of cells make it tough. it has a protective function
Where can stratified epithelium be found?
in areas that are subjected to friction eg. oesophagus, mouth, vagina. In areas where it is objects to considerable abrasion, the cells are infiltrated with a tough protein called keratin, as seen in the epidermis
transitional Epithelium
Layers of cells which can stretch. A modified form of stratified epithelium.
Where can transitional epithelium be found?
in structures that must be able to stretch e.g bladder, urethra
Glandular epithelium
This type of epithelium has interspersed secretory cells, which secrete mucus/materials into the cavity or space they are lining. Folding of glandular epithelium results in the formation of a gland
List the types of connective tissue
Areolar (loose conective) tissue Dense connective tissue Reticular tissue Adipose (fat) tissue Cartilage Bone
What is a mucous membrane?
a mucous producing epithelial tissue
What is the pharynx lined with?
stratified squamous epithelial tissue
What do ligaments do?
connect bone to bone
