Body Cavities Flashcards
Name the 3 body cavities
Thoracic cavity
Abdominal cavity
Pelvic Cavity
Parietal
the serous membrane that lines the boundaries or sides of the cavity
Visceral
the serous membrane that covers all the organs within the cavity
What is a serous membrane?
a single continuous layer of epithelium that produces a watery or serous lubricating fluid
What does serous fluid do?
acts as a lubricant between the surfaces of the cavity and the organs and structures within it
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines the thoracic cavity?
Pleura
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines the thoracic surface of the diaphragm?
Diaphragmatic pleura
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines the inside of the ribs?
costal pleura
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines over the lungs?
Pulmonary pleura
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines the mediastinum?
Mediastinal pleura
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity?
Peritoneum
What is the name of the serous membrane that suspends the organs within the cavity?
Mesentery
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines over the stomach?
Greater momentum attached to greater curvature, lesser momentum attached to lesser curvature
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines over the duodenum?
Mesoduodenum
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines over the ovary?
Mesovarium
What is the name of the serous membrane that lines over the uterus?
Mesometrium
What is the lateral boundary of the thoracic cavity?
Rib and intercostal muscles
what is the cranial boundary of the thoracic cavity?
the thoracic inlet
What is the thoracic inlet?
an oval opening parallel to the first rib pair
what is the caudal boundary of the thoracic cavity?
the diaphragm
what is the dorsal boundary of the thoracic cavity?
the hypaxial muscles and thoracic vertebrae
what is the ventral boundary of the thoracic cavity?
the sternum
What is the lateral boundary of the abdominal cavity?
abdominal oblique muscles and shaft of the ilium on either side
what is the cranial boundary of the abdominal cavity?
the diaphragm
what is the caudal boundary of the abdominal cavity?
the pelvic outlet which is closed off by the coccygeal and retractor ahi muscles - the pelvic diaphragm
What is the dorsal boundary of the abdominal cavity?
the hypaxial muscles and lumbar vertebrae
what is the ventral boundary of the abdominal cavity?
the abdominal muscles, ischium and pubis on either side
What is a mesentery?
a wide peritoneal fold attaching organs to the abdominal wall and containing blood vessels lymph vessels or nerves
What is an omentum?
a wide peritoneal fold enclosing and attaching the stomach to other organs and the abdominal wall.
what omentum contains a lot of fat?
the greater omentum
what is a soft tissue ligament?
runs from an organ to the abdominal wall or to another organ. it is narrow and contains few or no vessels
List the structures within the thoracic cavity
Mediastunum Heart Trahcea Oesophagus Thymus Bronchi Lung tissue Lymph nodes and vessels Blood vessels nerves
List the structures within the abdominal cavity
Liver Gall bladder Spleen Oesophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Pancreas reproductive organs ureters urinary bladder urethra lymph nodes and vessels blood vessels nerves
