Bone growth Flashcards
Hypertrophy
To increase in size
Chondrocyte
A cel that makes up the tissue of cartilage
Ossification
The normal process by which bone is formed
Periosteum
A membrane surrounding a bone
Metaphysis
The part of a long bone that grows during development
Diaphysis
The central shaft of any long bone
Epiphysis
The rounded end of any long bone
Intramembranous ossification
includes the growth of flat bones as well as those of the skull, the bone forms between two layers of periosteum.
Endochondral ossification
Occurs on all limb bones. Hyaline cartilage model forms and becomes ossified or changes to bone.
Epiphyseal plate
A thin plate of cartilage at the end of the bone that forms so that the bone is able to grow in length. This closes over when the animal reaches its final size
Mesenchyme
a loosely organized, mainly mesodermal embryonic tissue which develops into connective and skeletal tissues, including blood and lymph.
