The urinary system Flashcards
Where are the Kidneys located?
within the Retroperitoneum close to the dorsal body wall
Which kidney lies more cranial?
the Right Kidney
What are the 3 layers of the kidney?
Crotex, medulla and pelvis
What is a Nephron?
the functional area of the kidney
Where is the bowman’s capsule located?
in the cortex
What is the Glomerulus surrounded by?
the Bowman’s capsule
What does the Afferent arterioles do?
supply the glomerules
what does the efference arterioles do?
drains the glomerules
What does the bowman’s capsule lead to?
the proximal convoluted tubule
What does the proximal convoluted tubule lead to?
the loop of Henle
What does the loop of Henle lead to?
the distal convoluted tubule
What does the distal convoluted tubule lead to?
the collecting ducts in the medulla
What is the Renal pelvis?
the collecting duct into the ureter
What does the urinary tract consist of?
Pair of kidneys
pair of ureters
bladder
urethra
What carries blood to the kidneys?
Renal artery
What takes blood away from the kidneys?
Renal vein
What do the ureters do?
run urine from the kidneys to the bladder
Where do the ureters run?
Caudally from the renal pelvis to the urinary bladder
Where do the ureters enter the bladder?
Trigone
What are the layers of the kidney?
Capsule
Cortex
Medulla
Pelvis
What is the appearance of the renal capsule?
Irregular dense connective tissue forming a protective outer layer
What is the appearance of the renal cortex?
Dark red in colour. Contains the glomerular capsule, the glomeruli and the convoluted tubules of the renal nephrons
What is the appearance of the medulla?
Slightly pled red. May be possible to see the renal pyramids containing the loops of hence with the collecting ducts between them
What is the appearance of the renal pelvis?
May appear whitish due to the high content of fibrous connective tissue. Basin-shaped structure which drains the urine from the collecting ducts into the single ureter.
