They were the most influential Jewish group; they were from the old aristocratic families of Judea so were used to wealth and privilege

Conservative and old-fashioned

The Torah; they took maintaining the laws in these scriptures very seriously

Maintaining the temple and carrying out the sacrifices detailed in the Old Testament
