What is the Maritime Labour Convention?
A
The MLC provides international standards which impact the seafarer and ship owner.
It establishes minimum working and living standards for all seafarers working on ship of flag states who have ratified the agreement.

What are the key parts to MLC?
A
- Minimum requirements (age, medicals, training and qualifications)
- Age (no under 16 - at night no under 18)
- Medical Certification (all seafarers must have correct medicals to work at sea)
- Training and Qualifications ( All training to conform to IMO standards)
- Conditions of employment ( employee agreements, wages, hours of rest, entitlement to leave, repatriation, compensation for a ships loss or foundering, manning levels, career/skill development, employment opportunities)
- Wages (paid monthly, currency conversion charges to reasonable limits)
- Hours of Rest

10 hours rest in a 24 hour period
