What is a pilot ladder used for?
A
A pilot ladder is used as an access point for a pilot to join/leave a ship.

How long can a pilot ladder be?
A
It will be not less than 1.5m and no more than 9m

What happens if you reach the 9m limit of the pilot ladder?
A
Then an accommodation ladder is used to embark the pilot, it will facing aft and exceed no more than 45 degrees

When pilots are being transferred what equipment is needed?
A
- Two man ropes of not less than 28mm in diameter
- A lifebuoy equipped with a self-igniting light
- A heaving line
- Adequate lighting at the pilot station

What details are required on the pilot ladder?
A
- 5th step from the bottom must be a spreader
- Maximum 9 steps between spreaders
- All steps rest firmly against the ship
- Man-rope must be without knots
- Pilot ladder to be secured to a strong point on the deck

What are the NO’s of the pilot ladder?
A
- No shackles, knots or splices
- Steps must be equally spaced
- Steps must be horizontal and chocks under the steps must be highly secured
- Spreaders must not be lashed between steps
- Side ropes must be equally spaced
- Steps should not be painted, dirty or slippery
