What is ISPS?

A

International Ship Port Facility Security code was brought into force as a maritime response to the increased terrorists threats after the events in 2001. The code was adopted under SOLAS chapter XI ‘Special Measures to Enhance Maritime Security’.

What certificates are require in ISPS?

A

Ships are required to carry an ‘International ship security certificate’, which is valid for 5 years as a evidence of compliance.

What is the Objective of ISPS?

A

To clearly define roles and responsibilities of port facilities, ships, shipping companies and governments in order to enhance security on ships and at port facilities.

What are the levels of security?

A

Level 1 = Normal operating level for ships and ports
Level 2 = Enhanced security level
Level 3 = There is a specific threat to the ship or port facility

When would you train for security drills?

A
  • A security drill must be carried out at least once every 3 months
  • If following a crew change more than 25% of the crew have not participated in a security drill in the last 3 months a drill must be carried out within a week
  • The ship should participate in a security exercise once every 12 months with no more than 18 months in-between
