What is the IMDG code?
The International Maritime Dangerous Goods code was developed to enhance and harmonise the safe carriage of dangerous goods and to prevent pollution to the environment at sea.
It gives details of each substance, including packaging, stowage and segregation of incompatible substances.
What are the volumes of the IMDG code?
There are 2 volumes and 1 supplement.
Volume 1 - this volume include parts 1-7 apart from part 3.
Part 1 - General provisions, definitions and training
Part 2 - Classifications
Part 4 - Packing and tank provisions
Part 5 - Consignment procedures
Part 6 - Provisions for the construction and testing of pressure receptacles, aerosol dispenser, small receptacles containing gas and fuel cell cartridges containing liquefied flammable gas
Part 7 - Requirements on transport operations
Volume 2 - contains part 3 and 2 appendixes
Part 3 - Dangerous goods list
Appendix A - List of generic and N.O.S (not otherwise specified) proper shipping names
Appendix B - Glossary of terms
Supplement - includes additional provisions for sea transport

What are the classes of IMDG?
There are 9 in total Class 1 - Explosives Class 2 - Gases Class 3 - Flammable liquids Class 4 - Flammable solids Class 5 - Oxidising substances and organic peroxides Class 6 - Toxic + infectious substances Class 7 - Radioactive material Class 8 - Corrosive substances Misc - Miscellaneous dangerous substances and environmentally hazardous substances
