What does ECDIS stand for?
A
It stands for Electronic Chart Display system

Whats the difference between vector and raster charts?
A
Vector charts are built up of layers of information that can be integrated to display more information - this chart is called an Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC)
Raster charts a digital scanned copy’s of paper charts - this chart is called Raster Navigation Chart (RNC)

Can the ECDIS be integrated with other equipment on the bridge?
A
Yes it can integrated with the radar, AIS and BNWAS

Why is an ENC better than a RNC?
A
It allows the user to input safety limits depending on the ships characteristics, the ECDIS will then sound an audible alarm in the following parameters are triggered:
- Crossing a safety contour
- Approaching a special area
- Deviation from the route
- Approach to a critical point
- Different geodetic datum
- Malfunction of the ECDIS
