What is STCW?
A
The International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) is the principle standards for crew certification and training and is enforced world-wide.
The STCW code is in 2 parts:
- Part 1 = Mandatory requirements
- Part 2 = Recommended guidance and advice on how to meet the mandatory requirements
The convention also regulates watch-keeping arrangements, minimum rest hours.

The Manila amendments is where the STCW was revisited and amended parts of the code including licensing and certification, operations, manning, training and changes to work and rest hours.
