Hydrometer Flashcards
What is the Hydrometer?
The hydrometer is used to measure the relative density of a liquid.
How does the hydrometer work?
It works on the Archimedes principle, which states that a solid suspended in a fluid is buoyed by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the submerged part of the suspended solid.
Basically, the lower the density of the water the deeper a hydrometer will sink.
What is the purpose of the Hydrometer?
The hydrometer can be used to find the relative density of the dock water. If you know this you can calculate the dock water allowance.
The dock water allowance is the number of millimetres the mean draught changes by when the ship passes from dock water to salt water. This will allow the ship to be loaded as efficiently as possible.
