What is an MSN?

A

A Merchant Shipping Notice, contains the technical detail of regulations called ‘Statutory Instruments’. This is mandatory information and must be complied with under UK legislation.

An example:

  • MSN 1781: COLREGS
  • MSN 1560: Survival at sea

What is an MGN?

A

A Marine Guidance Notice are used to give advice and guidance relating to the improvement of the safety of shipping and of life at sea, and to prevent or minimise pollution from shipping.

An example:

  • MGN 379: Use of electronic aids to navigation
  • MGN 315: Keeping a safe navigational watch

What is an MIN?

A

A Marine Information Note is used to give information which is only valid for a short period of time, such as timetables for MCA exams. Its also for small groups of people, such as training establishments or equipment manufacturers.
