What are your actions in the event of a MOB?
- Release the bridge wing lifebuoy on the side of the casualty
- Put wheel over to side of the casualty
- Sound 3 prolongers blasts
- Inform master
- Activate MOB button on ECDIS
- Post extra lookouts
- Log ships position, wind speed and direction
- Prepare the rescue boat
- Prepare medical equipment
- Send Urgency or distress msg as per masters instructions
- Follow emergency plan as per company’s SMS
What are your actions in the event of a collision?
- Call the master
- Sound general emergency alarm
- Manoeuvre ship to minimise the effect of the impact
- Close watertight and fire doors
- Stop main engines
- Display correct lights and shapes
- Conduct stability assessment
- Monitor traffic and weather conditions
- Sound all bilges and tanks
- Assess whether watertight integrity has been compromised
- Send urgency or distress msg as per master instructions
- Offer assistance to other vessel involved
- Follow emergency plan as per company’s SMS
What are your actions in the event of a grounding?
- Stop engines
- Sound general emergency alarm
- Close all watertight and fire doors
- Display appropriate lights and shapes and sounds correct sound signal
- Investigate charts
- Sound around the ships
- Take soundings of tanks and bilges
- Assess internal damage
- Alert vessels in the area
- Send urgency or distress msg as per master instructions

What are your actions in the event of flooding?
- Close all watertight and fire doors
- Call master
- Inform engine room
- Monitor environment to prevent more water ingress
- Sound all tanks and bilges
- Estimate the rate of ingress of water
- Assess whether the ship is holed above or below the waterline
- Send urgency or distress msg as per masters instruction
- Follow emergency plan as per company’s SMS
What are your actions in the event of a fire?
- Call the master
- Sound general emergency alarm
- Shut down ventilation systems
- Locate fire
- Muster crew to fire control stations
- Assess proximity of nav hazards, traffic and manoeuvre ship as needed
- Broadcast urgency or distress msg as per masters instructions
- Maintain log of events
- Follow emergency procedures as per company’s SMS
What is IAMSAR?
The International Aeronautical and Marine Search and Rescue manual provides guidelines for the co-ordination and organisation of marine and air facilities in a search and rescue scenario. It is spilt into 3 volumes
What are the volumes of IAMSAR?
Volume 1 = Organisation and Management
Volume 2 = Mission Co-ordination
Volume 3 = Mobile Facilities
Are all the volumes of IAMSAR required on ships?
No, only the third volume Mobile Facilities is mandatory onboard vessels.

- Call the master
- Take action to keep ship away from danger
- Monitor traffic situation
- Identify navigational hazards
- Display NUC lights or shapes and sound signals appropriate
- Prepare for anchoring if water depth and conditions are appropriate

- Disengage autopilot
- manoeuvre ship as appropriate / stop engines

- Prepare anchor if appropriate
