The Heart - Organisation P2 Flashcards
What part of the heart has oxygenated blood?
Left side
Why do ventricles have thicker walls than the atria?
They have to push blood further than the atria
Why does the left ventricle have thicker walls than the right ventricle?
It has to push more blood and pump with a greater force - higher pressure
What are the top two parts of the heart called?
The atrium
What are the bottom two parts of the heart called?
ventricles
What is a double circulatory system?
When blood passes through the heart twice on every full circuit of the body
What do coronary arteries do?
Supplies the heart with blood, oxygen and nutrients
What do valves do?
Prevents backflow of blood
Which blood vessel carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs?
Pulmonary artery
Name the parts of the heart in order in which the blood flows
Vena cava - right atrium - right ventricle - pulmonary artery - lungs - pulmonary vein - left atrium - left ventricle - aorta - body tissues
What controls your resting heart rate?
Group of cells in the right atrium wall that act as a pacemaker
What do those cells do (resting heart rate)?
Produce a small electric impulse which spreads to surrounding muscle cells , causing them to contract
What does an artifical pacemaker do?
Controls heartbeat if natural pacemaker cells dont work prop. eg if patient has irregular heartbeat
How does an artificial pacemaker work?
Lil device implanted under skin and has a wire going to the heart - produces electric current to keep heart beating prop
