Anaerobic & Aerobic Respiration - Bioenergetics Flashcards
What is the chemical equation for aerobic respiration? (word)
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide+ water
What is the chemical equation for aerobic respiration? (symbol)
C₆H₁₂C₆ + 6O₂→6CO₂ +6H₂O
Why is anaerobic respiration less effecient and why?
Lactic acid causes muscles to tire and fatigue.
The lactic acid is sent to the liver by the blood from the muscles - but requires oxygen to turn into carbon dioxide and water or convert glucose into glycogen.
Since there is not enough oxygen this is called oxygen debt and causes us to puff and pant after excercise.
What is the word equation for anaerboic respiration for plants and some microorganisms?
glucose→ ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
What is the symbol equation for anaerboic respiration for plants and some microorganisms?
C₆H₁₂O₆ → 2C₂H₅OH₂ +energy
Is respiration an endothermic or exothermic reaciton?
Exothermic
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called?
Fermentation
Why does the heart rate increase?
To pump oxygenated blood faster to the muscle cells
Why does the breathing rate increase?
Increases amount of oxygen entering the bloodstream
What is glucose used for?
- Aerobic respiration
- Converted to glycogen and stored in the liver for late use
Explain why the death of a pond snail causes the concentration of co2 to increase
The snail is being decomposed by bacteria, the respiration of bacteria releases co2
When do we respire anerobically?
Excercise - shortage of oxygen
Why does anerobic respiration release much less energy than aerobic repsiration?
In anerobic respiration, the oxidation of glucose is incomplete
What is respiration and what type of reaction is it?
Exothermic - Process of transferring energy from glucose which goes in every cell
Give 3 examples of how organisms use the energy transferred by respiration
- To build up larger molecules from smaller ones (like proteins from amino acids)
- Allos muscles to contract to move about
- Keeps body temp steady in cold environment (mammals and birds)
