Q

Why is anaerobic respiration less effecient and why?

A

Lactic acid causes muscles to tire and fatigue.
The lactic acid is sent to the liver by the blood from the muscles - but requires oxygen to turn into carbon dioxide and water or convert glucose into glycogen.
Since there is not enough oxygen this is called oxygen debt and causes us to puff and pant after excercise.

Q

Give 3 examples of how organisms use the energy transferred by respiration

A
  • To build up larger molecules from smaller ones (like proteins from amino acids)
  • Allos muscles to contract to move about
  • Keeps body temp steady in cold environment (mammals and birds)

Q

What happens to glucose in anaerobic respiration?

A

Incomplete breakdown of glucose

17
Q

What is cellular respiration

A

an exothermic reaction which transfers energy from glucose and is continously occuring in living cells

18
Q

How do organisms use their energy?

A
  • To build larger molecules from smaller
  • Muscular contraction
  • maintain body temp
19
Q

What can lactic acid do?

A

Damage cells and leads to an oxygen debt
