Energy Resources - Energy Flashcards
1
Q
Name the main renewable energy sources
A
- Wind
- Solar
- Geothermal
- Water waves
- Biofuels
- Hydroelectricity
- Tidal
2
Q
Name some examples of fossil fuels
A
- Coal
- Crude Oil
- Natural Gas
3
Q
Name examples of non renewable sources
A
- Fossil fuels
- Nuclear energy
4
Q
What is the difference between renewable energy resources and non renewable energy resources?
A
Renewable energy can not be depleted (run out, they can be replenished). Non renewable energy can run out and is not reliable.
5
Q
How can the heat of fossil fuels be used for?
A
- Burn to provide heat for direct use e.g. cooking
- Generate electricity
- To power engines
6
Q
Pros of fossil fuels
A
- Cheap
- Can be used in any conditions (don’t need wind or sunshine)
- Reliable
7
Q
Cons of fossil fuels
A
- Limited
- Produce carbon dioxide when burned - greenhouse gas and contributes to global warming
- Can produce toxic gases when burned e.g. sulfur dioxide (causes acid rain) and carbon monoxide
8
Q
Pros of nuclear energy
A
- Do not produce any pollutants
- Can be used in any conditions
- Unlikely to run out in a long time
9
Q
Cons of nuclear energy
A
- Finite resource
- Produce radioactive waste/ nuclear waste which is harmful and lasts a long time
- Expensive
- Dangerous
10
Q
Pros of wind
A
- Low running costs
- Turns kinetic energy to electrical energy
- Doesn’t release CO2
- Renewable
11
Q
Cons of wind
A
- High upfront costs
- Noisy
- Destroys natural habitat
- Expensive to build
- Looks ugly
- Dependant on wind
- Takes a lot of space
12
Q
Pros of solar energy
A
- Renewable
- Reduces climate change
- Makes electricity and heat without releases greenhouse gases
13
Q
Cons of solar energy
A
- Can’t work at night
- Expensive
