Energy stores - Energy Flashcards
Define energy
something we cannot see but is present in all systems (objects). Energy transfers are the consequence of when things do work (or move)
Name the stores of energy
- Chemical
- Gravitational Potential
- Kinetic
- Elastic Potential
- Thermal
What is a system?
Object
What is an open system?
When the system can gain or lose energy from the environment
What is a closed system?
No energy can be gained or lost between the system and environment
What 2 factors affect the emount of kinetic energy and how?
Speed is faster - more kinetic energy
Mass is larger - more kinetic energy
What is a pathway?
Method energy is transferred
Name the 4 pathways
- Mechanically
- Electrically
- Heating
- Radiation
Define the pathway mechanically
when a force acts and on object moves
Define the pathway electrically
when an electric current flows
Define the pathway heating
a temperature difference between objects
Define the pathway radiation
electromagnetic waves or sound
What is the conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
What is a wasted store?
Store of energy that is produced which is not useful to the use
