Mitosis - Organisation P1 Flashcards
1
Q
How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have?
A
23 pairs
2
Q
What happens during mitosis?
4 steps
A
- DNA replicates to form 2 copies of each chromosome
- Cell grows and copies its internal structures eg mitochondria and ribosomes
- 1 set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell, nucleas also divides
- Cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form 2 identical daughter cells
3
Q
What are chromosomes?
A
They are made up of genes that have the instructions for making new cells/tissues/organs.
4
Q
Name the functions of mitosis
A
- Essential for growth and development of multicellular organisms
- Mitosis happens when an organism has to repair itself
MAIN: GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND REPAIR
5

10
Q
What are chromosomes made out of and where are they located?
A
They are found in the nucleas and they are made out of DNA
