Metabolism - Bioenergetics Flashcards
1
Q
What is metabolism?
A
The sum of all reactions in a cell or body
2
Q
What does a lipid molecule break down into?
A
- 3 fatty acids
- 1 glycerol molecule
3
Q
Name 5 metabolic reactions
A
- Glucose to cellulose in plants to strengthen cell walls
- Glucose to glycogen in animal cells for storage
- Formation of lipids froma molecule of glycerol and 3 moleucles of fatty acids
- Break down of proteins to form urea for excretion
- Respiration
4
Q
What is a breakdwon reaciton?
A
Breaking down molecules
5
Q
What’s a synthesis reaction?
A
Building and joining molecules to form something
6
Q
Name 3 reactions where larger molecules are made from smaller ones
A
- Glucose molecules join together to make starch, glycogen, cellulose
- Lipid molecules are each made from 1 molecule of glycerol and 3 fatty acids
- Glucose is combined with nitrate ions to = amino acids which are made into proteins
7
Q
Name 2 reactions where larger molecules are broken down to form smaller ones
A
- Glucose broken down in respiration. Res. transfers energy to power all the reactos in the body that make molecules
- Excess proteins is broken down in a reaction that produces urea. Urea is excreted in urine
8
Q
What is glycogen?
A
Storage form of glucose
9
Q
What molecules are present in a lipid molecule to form what?
A
- 1 glycerol molecule
- 3 fatty acid molecules
- Lipid found in cell membrane
10
Q
Why do you respire more when you excercise?
A
- Muscles need energy from respiration to contract
- Energy comes from increased respiration
- Breakthing arate and breath volume increaase to get more oxygen into the blood
- Heart rate increases to get oxygenated blood around body faster - removes CO2 faster
