Conduction and Convection - Energy Flashcards
What is conduction and what state of matter does it take place in?
It is when vibrating particles transfer kinetic energy to neighbouring particles - it happens in solids.
What is convection?
How heat is transferred to fluids (liquids and gases) - where energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
What is radiation?
How heat is transferred through empty space
Why does conduction only happen in solids?
Particles in solids are held together closely which means collisions often happens to pass on energy
What happens during covection?
- Particles gain kinetic energy
- Particles spread out, becoming less dense
- Heated particles rise and cool particles sink
- Cool Particles gain energy and rise and become warm particles
- The initial warm particles lose energy and sink
How is energy tranferred in radiation?
By infrared waves
What are fluids?
- Liquids
- Gases
- Particles are free to move around
What is thermal conductivity?
A measure of how quickly energy is transferred through a material in this way. High means energy transfer between particles is quick
What is conduction?
Process where vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
Describe conduction
- Energy transfered to an object by heating is transfered to the thermal store of the object
- Energy is shared across the kinetic energy stores of the particles in the object
- Particles vibrate and collide more. These collisions cause nergy to be transferred between particles kinetic energy stores
- Process continues throughout the object until energy is transferred to the other side of the object
