The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

- Temperature - particles will have more kinetic energy thus will move around faster
- Concentration gradient - the bigger the difference, the faster rate of diffusion
- Surface area of membrane - larger the surface area, the faster the rate of diffusion - more particles will move throught the membrane at the same time
