How many future tenses are there in French?
Two: the simple future (le futur simple) and the future perfect (le futur antérieur).

How is the futur simple of regular verbs formed?
The future stem of the -er and -ir verbs is the entire infinitive. Regular -re drop the final -e of the infinitive before adding on the endings. The future endings are: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. These endings are taken from the present tense of the verb ''avoir'' and are used for both regular and irregular verbs. je travaillerai tu travailleras il travaillera nous travaillerons vous travaillerez ils travailleront

- Verbs which contain ‘‘e’’ in the next to the last syllabe of the infinitive form:
- with some of these verbs, ‘‘e’’ becomes ‘‘è’’ in all persons
acheter
j’achèterai, tu achèteras, il achètera, nous achèterons, vous achèterez, ils achèteront
- with others, the last consomnant of the stem is doubled in all persons
jeter
je jetterai, tu jetteras, il jettera, nous jetterons, vous jetterez, ils jetteront - Verbs ending in -oyer (except envoyer which is irregular) and -uyer change the ‘‘y’’ into an ‘‘i’’ in all persons.

BUT
Verbs which have ‘‘é’’ in the next to last syllabe of the infinitive (such as répéter, préférer, etc.) keep ‘‘é’’ in all persons.

When is the simple future used?
- To describe a future action or situation.
- After ‘‘si’’ meaning ‘‘wether’’ if the action in the subordinate clause refers to the future, and if the introductory verb (i.e. the verb in the main clause) is in the present tense.
f.e. Sais-tu si elle viendra?
However ‘‘si’’ meaning ‘‘if’’ (expressing a condition) can never be followed by the future. The present tense is used instead.
f.e. Je te téléphonerai si je peux. - In the main clause of sentences expressing a condition when the present tense is used in the si-clause, and when a future action or situation is referred to.
f.e. S’il pleut, nous resterons à la maison. - In polite expressions used by shop keepers when speaking to their customers.
f.e. Ce sera tout? - In subordinate clauses after the verb ‘‘espérer’’ when it refers to a future action or situation.
f.e. J’espère que tu suivras mon conseil. - In subordinate clauses after the conjunctions ‘‘quand’’, ‘‘lorsque’’, ‘‘dès que’’, ‘‘aussitôt que’’, ‘‘tant que’’, when the verb in the main clause is in the future or imperative and when a future action or situation is referred to.
f.e. Quand je serai grand, je serai homme 1d’affaires. - To express an order (in a more polite fashion than with the imperative)
f.e. Vous lui direz bonjour de ma part. - To express an assumption on the part of the speaker, i.e. the probability of a present action or situation (especially with the verbs ‘‘être’’ and ‘‘avoir’’)

How is the futur proche formed, and when is it used?
The futur proche consists of the present verb ‘‘aller’‘+infinitive. It is used to express an event or situation in the future, especially when it is the near future. The English equivalent of this construction is ‘‘to be going to+infinitive’’.

The futur antérieur consists of the simple future of ‘‘avoir’’ or ‘‘être’‘+past participle of the verb.
f.e. J’aurai travaillé.

When is the futur antérieur used?
- For actions or situations which will be completed at or by a specified time in the future.
f.e. Dans trente ans, le nombre de véhicules dans le monde aura doublé. - After ‘‘si’’ meaning ‘‘whether’’
f.e. Je me demande s’il aura terminé à temps. - After the conjunctions ‘‘dès que’’, ‘‘aussitôt que’’, ‘‘quand’’, ‘‘lorsque’’, ‘‘une fois que’’, ‘‘tant que’’, and ‘‘après que’’ for actions and situations which will be completed before another future action. In these sentences, the verb in the main clause is in the simple future or in the imperative.
f.e. Je vous rejoindrai aussitôt que j’aurai mangé. - To expression an assumption on the part of the speaker, i.e., the probability of a past action or situation.
