    BUT
    If an adjective is used adverbially, and if not the manner of an action, but the physical or moral state of a subject is to be expressed, the adjectives agrees with the subject.
    f.e. Ils peuvent dormir tranquilles.
    e) adjectives which follow “ce+être”; they do not agree with the noun(s) they refer to.
    f.e. Hier, j’ai vu deux pièces de théâtre. C’était intéressant.
    f) adjectives which follow “quelque chose de, rien de, quelqu’un de, personne de”.
    f.e. Je cherche quelque chose de joli. BUT Je cherche une jolie chose.
  2. The adjectives “demi” and “nu” are invariable when they precede the noun (to which they are attached by a hyphen); they agree when they follow it.
    f. e. une demi-heure (half an hour) BUT une heure et demie
  3. With expression “avoir l’air” the adjective agrees:
    - with the subject if it is a thing
    f. e. Cette proposition a l’air intéressante.
    - with the subject or the word “air” (which is masculine) when the subject is a person
    f. e. Elle a l’air fatiguée. or: Elle a l’air fatigué.
  4. If the adjective modifies several nouns or pronouns, it is
    - masculine plural if the nouns and pronouns are masculine or if they are of two different genders
    f.e. un livre et un cahier neufs
    un chandail et une jupe violets
    - feminine plural if the nouns or pronouns are feminine
    f.e. une table et une chaise noires

What is the position of an adjective in a sentence?

  1. In French the vast majority of descriptive adjectives are placed after the noun they modify
    f.e. un vélo rouge
  2. A small number of French adjectives generally precedes the noun.
    a) adjectives which are short and common, most of them expressing beauty, age, goodness and size, and therefore often referred as BAGS adjectives
    bon, mauvais, beau, joli, grand, petit, nouveau, jeune, vieux, autre, gros, long (sometimes pleced after the noun f.e. une robe longue), premier, haut.
    b) some adjectives (merveilleux, magnifique, immense, superbe, extraordinaire, excellent, triste, énorme, terrible, véritable, etc.) which usually follow the noun can be placed before the noun for emphasis or stylistic effect.
    f.e. C’est une excellente idée!
    c) adjectives that usually follow the noun are placed before it with certain nouns or in certain fixed expressions
    f.e. faire la grasse matinée
  3. If two adjectives are present,
    - and one is usually before and one after the noun, they retain their usual position.
    f.e. un bon vin blanc
    - and both adjectives have the same position, either both before or both after the noun, they keep this position and are combined with the conjunction “et”.
    f.e. un professeur sévère et exigeant.
