What are the four categories and characteristic of pronominal verbs in French?
- Reflexive verbs
These verbs express actions which are performed by the subject on him/her/itself. They also have a non-reflexive form with the same meaning. In the non-reflexive form, the action is performed by the subject and received by an object.
Il réveille le bébé. - Il se réveille. - Idiomatic pronominal verbs
These verbs (whose pronoun is an inherent part of the verb without having a reflexive value) are made up of two groups.
- Verbs which exist only in the pronominal form such as ‘’s’en aller’’ (to go away), ‘‘se méfier de qqn/qqch’’ (to distrust), ‘‘se moquer de qqn/qqch’’ (to make fun of sb/sth), ‘‘se souvenir de de qqn/qqch’’ (to remember sb/sth), ‘’s’évanouir’’ (to faint).
- Verbs which have a non-pronominal form with a different meaning, f.e. ‘‘douter’‘-to doubt, ‘‘se douter de’’ - to suspect. - Reciprocal verbs
These are transitive verbs with which the reflexive pronoun is used in the plural (nous-, vous-, ils-, elles-) forms to express each other f.e. ‘‘Ils se connaissent’’. - Pronominal verbs with a passive meaning.
This use replaces a passive construction and is restricted to third person singular and plural. In this construction, the author of the action is not mentioned.
