Q

Conjunctions (les conjonctions)

What is the conjunctions’ functions and how many kinds of them are there?

A

Conjunctions are invariable expressions which link two words or two clauses. They can consist of only one word (simple conjunctions) or two or more words (compound conjunctions). There are two kinds of conjunctions:

  • Coordinating conjunctions (les conjonctions de coordination), which combine words or clauses of the same kind.
    e. g Il est beau et intelligent.
  • Subordinating conjunctions (les conjonctions de subordination), which link a main clause to a subordinate clause.
    e. g. Je sui resté à la maison parce qu’il pleuvait.
