Q

in the resting lung, alveolar air pressure is equivalent to atmospheric air pressure but
intrapleural pressure is slightly lower. Briefly describe why this is the case

A

the lungs have elastic recoil and they are trying to pull the plural sack away from the thoracic wall.
However, the parietal pleurae are anchored to the thoracic wall so that they cant collapse.

The result is a reduced pressure in the pleural fluid which balances the tendency of the lungs to
collapse with the inability of the pleurae to be pulled away from the chest wall
