Strength Training Flashcards
What is static strength ?
Ability to apply force aginst a resistance without any movement. The muscle length remains constant.
(Isometric)
What is Dynamic Strength ?
TThe ability to apply force to overcome a resistance, where movement occurs. The muscle length changes.
(Isotonic)
What is strength endurance ?
The ability to sustain repeated muscular contractions over a period of time.
What is maximum strength ?
The ability o apply maximum force in one singular muscular contraction.
What is explosive strength ?
The ability to apply maximum force in a series of rapid muscular contractions.
Give an example of strength endurance
Swimming, gymnastics, rowing
Give an example of maximum strength
Rugby scrum, weight lifting, karate
Give an example of explosive strength
Triple jump
What 2 factors does the strength of muscular contractions depend on ?
- Muscle fibre the being recruited
- The cross sectional area of muscle
What is he importance of the muscle fibre type being recruited ?
Fast glycolytic muscle fibres exert grater force with greater speed of contraction than other muscle fibres.
Motor units consisting of FG muscle fibres are larger and send faster impulses that S muscle fibres. These units have highest maximum and explosive strength.
What is the importance of the cross sectional area of a muscle ?
The greater the cross sectional area of muscle the greater the strength or force of contraction.
Age, genders d training all affect the size of the cross sectional area.
What the test for strength endurance ? (2)
Abdominal curl test
Perform sit ups in time with beat, progressive training.
Press up test
As many press ups possible, hands shoulder width apart.
What are the tests for maximum strength ? (2)
1 Rep max
Performer selects piece of equipment for free weight exercise. The score is the highest weight performer can lift once
Grip strength dynamometer
Tales three turns and records best score.
Dialled back to zero each attempt.
What is the test for explosive strength ?
Vertical jump test
Mark max standing position with one arm, jump and mark highest jump reach. The score is the difference between two marks.
