Aerobic Training Flashcards
What is aerobic capacity ?
The ability of the body to inspire, utilise and transport oxygen to perform a sustained period of aerobic (sub-maximal) activities.
What is maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) ?
The maximum volume of oxygen inspired, utilised and transported per minute during exhaustive exercise.
What are the effects and explanation for individual physiological make-up ?
Effect: more efficient cardiovascular and respiratory systems = higher VO2 max
Explanation: individuals with large lung volumes, strong ventricular muscles, many Slow Oxidative fibres are able to inspire, utilise and transport oxygen more efficiently.
What are the effects and explanation for training ?
Effect: aerobic training = higher VO2 max by 10-20%
Explanation: Long term aerobic training effects include: cardiac hypertrophy and increased: respiratory muscle function, red bloods cell and mitochondria
What is the effect and explanation of age ?
Effect: VO2 max peaks around 20 years old and declines 1% each year from then on
Explanation: loss of elasticity of lungs, heart and blood vessel tissues reduce the efficiency of the cardiovascular system.
What is the effect and explanation of gender ?
Effect: Males typically have higher VO2 max than females by 15-30%.
Explanation: Males have greater lung and blood volumes, and greater heart size to inspire and transport more oxygen. They also have greater muscle mass which increases the utilisation of oxygen.
