Energy Systems Flashcards
What is ATP made up of ?
Adenosine (1) and phosphate (3)
What is ATP ?
Molecule held together by high energy phosphate bonds, (energy) released to cause muscular contraction.
What is an exothermic reaction ?
A reaction that gives off heat / energy
What is an endothermic reaction ?
A reaction which requires heat / energy
What is the word equation for an exothermic reaction ?
ATP —> (ATPase) —> ADP P Energy
What is the word equation for an endothermic reaction ?
Energy P ADP —> ATP
What is creatine kinase ?
A catalyst to break the bond between creatine and single phosphate (to release energy).
What is the energy released from the reaction used for ?
Reconnecting the free phosphate to the adenosine diphosphate to recreate ATP.
How long does the ATP - PC system last ?
Up to 10 seconds
ATP - PC system is used for high intensity exercise, what are some examples of these exercises ?
Shot put or a sprint to receive a ball in football.
What is the ‘metabolic fork’ ?
When glucose is broken down by PFK it divides into 2 purification acid molecules.
From this point the intensity of the exercise determine what the pyruvic is converted to:
1. Lactic acid without oxygen availability
2. Carbon dioxide + water (to create large amounts of energy for ATP re synthesis)
What is the chemical compound of glucose ?
C6H12O6
What is the chemical compound for pyruvate ?
C3H4O3
What is the glycolysis system triggered by ?
The rise of ADP in muscle cells
