EPOC Flashcards
What does EPOC stand for ?
Excess post-exercise oxygen consumption
What is EPOC ?
Continued aerobic energy production after exercise to replenish energy stores in muscle cells.
What is oxygen debt ?
The volume of oxygen used to return te body to pe-exercise values.
What is section A of EPOC ?
Oxygen deficit - the energy used during exercise, sourced from anaerobic processes
What is section B of EPOC ?
All the energy during exercise from aerobic processes.
What is section C of EPOC ?
The fast component of recovery, used to replenish ATP stores.
What is section D of EPOC ?
Slow component of recovery, used to remove lactic acid.
Explain the fast alactacid component of EPOC
- 10% of all EPOC
- 1-4 tres of oxygen used to complete process
- Blood and muscle oxygen
1 minute - oxygen reassociates with haemoglobin in blood
2-3. Minutes - myoglobin stores in muscle cells replenished - ATP/PC stores
50% 30 seconds
100% 3 minutes
Explain the slow alactacid component of EPOC
- begins when exercise ends
- 5-8 litres of oxygen seed to complete process
- During the process:
Lactic acid removed
Core body temp elevated
Some glycogen replenished
Decreased ventilation levels to maximise oxygen delivery
Decreased heart rate to maximise oxygen delivery
