What is a massage ?
A
A manual therapy used to assess, treat and manage soft tissue injury and pain.

What is lymphatic drainage ?
A
The carrying of wastage product away from tissue towards heart.

Why massage ?
A
- helps to treat soft tissue injury
- reduces tension in the musculoskeletal system.
- makes up part of injury prevention programme.

What are the benefits of massage ?

A
- realigns deeper connective tissues
- reduces muscle pain
- improves circulation and blood supply to area
- improves lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling
- increases range of motion and flexibility
- breaks down scar tissue
- increases rate of removal of harmful bi-products

How do you use massage in the inflammatory phase ?
A
- not advisable first 24 hours (risk of further damage or restarting bleeding)
- used once inflammatory phase subsided
- gentle to moderate pressure

How do you use massage in the repair phases ?
A
- assist healing process
- ling new fibres forming as scar tissue
- use moderate pressure ad massage along line of tissue

How do you massage in the remodelling phase ?
A
- promotes healing
- increases range blood flow
- helps align new fibres
- use firm pressure and massage across and along the line of tissue
