Sodium Bicarbonate Flashcards
Sodium Bicarb Class
Alkalizing agent, Antidote, Electrolyte, PH Buffer
Sodium Bicarb Action
Short acting potent acid buffer. Neutralizes excess acid buildup by binding with hydrogen ions to form carbonic acid (a weaker acid) to help restore normal pH; decreases precipitation of myoglobin in renal tubules
Sodium Bicarb Indications
Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) overdose, suspected hyperkalemia (dialysis pts) or metabolic acidosis, prolonged cardiac arrest, crush syndrome lasting longer than 4 hours, DKA,
Sodium Bicarb Contraindications
Alkalotic states, None in the emergency setting
Sodium Bicarb Adult Dose
1 mEq/kg IV
Sodium Bicarb Pedi Dose
