Calcium Chloride Flashcards
Calcium Chloride Class
Electrolyte, antidote
Calcium Chloride Action
Competes with potassium to increase inotropy & dromotropi effects.
Calcium Chloride Indications
- Cardiac arrest with suspected hypocalcemia or hyperkalemia
- Known calcium channel blocker overdose
- Crush syndrome with suspected hyperkalemia or lasting more than 4 hours
- magnesium overdose/hypermagnesemia
Calcium Chloride Contraindications
Hypercalcemia, Digatals Toxicity, V-Fib, Cardiac Arrest
Calcium Chloride Adult dose - Prophylaxis prior to calcium channel blocker administration
2–4 mg/kg Slow IVP/IO, repeat in 10 min PRN
Calcium Chloride Pedi dose - Prophylaxis prior to calcium channel blocker administration
20mg/kg q 10 min, max 1 g
Calcium Chloride Adult dose - Hyperkalemia/calcium channel blocker overdose:
500 mg to 1 g, repeat in 10 min PRN
Calcium Chloride Side Effects
Bradycardia, Hypotension, Syncope, headache, N/V, Dizziness
Calcium Chloride Onset
5-15 min
Calcium Chloride Durration
15 min - 4 hrs
Calcium Chloride Interactions
forms a precipitate when mixed with sodium bicarbonate; use with digoxin can increase cardiac irritability; can be mixed with water-soluble gel, such as K-Y Jelly, in the absence of calcium gluconate to topically treat hydrofluoric acid burns
Calcium Chloride Percautions
use caution in patients with renal insufficiency or heart disease; will cause tissue necrosis with IV infiltration
(formerly used for black widow bites and scorpion stings but no longer recommended; use analgesics for pain and benzodiazepines for muscle cramping)
