CNS depressant, narcotic analgesic (C)
Fentanyl Interactions
pain, sedation prior to rapid sequence intubation or other painful procedures
Fentanyl Mechanism
alters pain perception by inhibiting ascending pain pathways, binding to opiate receptors in the brain, and increasing pain threshold
Fentanyl Side Effects
- dizziness
- bradycardia
- hypotension
- blurred vision
- respiratory depression
- laryngospasms
- weakness
- nausea
- vomiting
- altered level of consciousness
Fentanyl Contraindications
hypersensitivity, head injury, myasthenia gravis
Fentanyl Precautions
increases intracranial pressure; use caution when administering to patients with seizure disorders and cardiac dysrhythmias; support ventilations and consider naloxone (Narcan) in case of respiratory depression
Fentanyl Interactions
use with other CNS depressants may increase the effects of fentanyl
