Q
Naloxone Class
A
Competitive narcotic agonist, antidote (B)
2
Q
Naloxone Indications
A
- Known or suspected narcotic overdose with respiratory rate less than 8
- Decreased tidal volume
- Decreased minute volume (pupil constriction is key finding)
3
Q
Naloxone Mechanism
A
Competes with narcotics at opiate receptor site in the CNS to reverse the effects of certain narcotic analgesics

Naloxone Side Effects
A
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Tachycardia
- Hypertension
- Withdrawal
- Anger
- Tremors
- Dysrhythmias
- Seizures.
5

Naloxone Contraindications
A
Hypersensitivity
6
Q
Naloxone Precautions
A
- Titrate dosage to respiratory rate and tidal volume
- Administrator prior to ET tube
- Monitor blood pressure (will not reverse narcotic-hypotension)
- Nausea/Vomiting may occure if given too quickly
- Seizures and withdrawal symptoms may occur if pts dependent on narcotics
7
Q
Naloxone Interactions
A
Narcotics often have a longer duration and may rebind to opiate receptor sites causing secondary CNS depression
