Aspirin Class
Analgesic (pain relief), antipyretic (reduce fever), Anti-platelet aggregate, NSAID,
Aspirin Action
Impedes clotting action and prolongs bleeding by blocking platelet aggregation. Increases pain threshold and reduces fever by acting on the hypothalamus.
Aspirin Indications
Fever, pain relief, chest pain with suspected AMI or ischemia
Aspirin Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, pts with known bleeding disorders, acute asthma
Aspirin Onset/Duration
Onset: 30-45 min
Duration: 1-4 hr
Aspirin Adult Dose/Route
Adult: 162-325 mg PO (children’s 81mg baby tablets)
Aspirin Pedi Dose/Route
Not recommended
Aspirin Side Effects
- Prolonged bleeding
- nausea
- vomiting
- rash
- heartburn
- GI bleeding
- epigastric pain
- wheezing
Aspirin Intereacrtions
warfarin (Coumadin) and other anticoagulants may potentiate the effect
Aspirin Precautions
Use caution in patients with recent surgery, active GI bleeding or ulcers, liver disease, hypersensitivity to other NSAIDs, and asthma (may increase viscosity of respiratory secretions and cause mucus plug formation)
