Magnesium Sulfate Class
Electrolyte, anticonvulsant, CNS depressant, anti-dysrythimic, tocolytic
Magnesium Sulfate Action
Reduces striated muscle contractions and blocks peripheral neurotransmitter by reducing acetylcholine at the myoneural junction
Magnesium Sulfate Indicaations
Seizures due to eclampsia after seizure activity is stopped, torsades de pontes, unstable v-tach attributed to digitalis toxicity, hypomagnesemia, status asmathecias unresponsive to beta-adrenergic drugs, preterm labor
oresisMagnesium Sulfate Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, shock, heart blocks, hypermagnesemia, myasthenia gravis
Magnesium Sulfate Side effects
Nausea, vomiting, flushing, diaphoresis, cramps, bradycardia
Magnesium Sulfate Adult dose - IVPB
Loading dose: 4-6g over 20 min, maintenance 1-3 g/hr tritiated top effect
Magnesium Sulfate Adult dose - polymorphic v-Tach (with pulse)
IV 1-2 g diluted in 50 ml NS over 15 minutes
Magnesium Sulfate adult dose - v-Fib/pulseless V-tach associated with torseda de pointes
1-2 g diluted in 10 ml NS given as a bolus
Magnesium Sulfate adult dose - eclampsia seizures
5 g IM in each buttock for a total of 10 g
Magnesium Sulfate adult dose - severe asthma
2 g as a signle dose over 20 minutes
Magnesium Sulfate pedi dose
25-50 mg/kg over 10-20 min mixed with NS to total volume of 20 mL (2g max dose)
Magnesium Sulfate Onset
Immediate (IV) 3-4 hrs (IM)
Magnesium Sulfate Duration
30 min (IV) 3-4 hrs (IM)
