Albuterol Flashcards
Albuterol Class
Sympathomimetic, bronchodilator, beta-2 agonist
Albuterol Action
Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by stimulating beta-2 receptors, causing bronchodilation and decreased airway resistance
Albuterol Indications
bronchospasms associated with asthma, COPD, bronchitis, toxic gas inhalation, near drowning, drug overdose, pulmonary edema
crush syndrome with suspected hyperkalemia
Albuterol Contraindications
hypersensitivity, symptomatic tachydysrhythmias
Albuterol Onset/Duration
Onset: 5–15 minutes
Duration: 3–4 hours
Albuterol Adult Dose Respiratory distress:
2.5 mg diluted in 3 ml NS nebulized at 6 LPM O2 over 5–15 minutes
Albuterol Adult dose crush injury/hyperkalemia
10–20 mg over 15 minutes
Albuterol Pedi Respiratory distress
0.05-0.15 mg/kg PRN
Albuterol Indications
epinephrine and other sympathomimetics may intensify the effects of albuterol; MAOI’s and tricyclic antidepressants may intensify cardiovascular side effects, specifically hypertension; beta-blockers may antagonize its effects
