What is commercialisation?
Commercialisation means making something available on the market, or using something to make a profit.
What are examples of commercialisation?
Advertising boards, sponsorship deals, TV coverage.
What is the ‘golden triangle’ made up of?
Sport, media, commercialisation.
What are some of the advantages of commercialisation?
- Supports athletes which enables them to do it full time.
- Clubs and individuals can become rich and famous.
- Raises awareness for sports.
- Promotes healthy lifestyle.
- Encourages people to get involved in sport.
What are some disadvantages of commercialisation?
- Product promotion from professional athletes boosts prices.
- Less attractive athletes miss out on sponsorship deals.
- Advertising breaks could spoil the enjoyment of a sport.
- Smaller clubs will struggle to compete as they have less income from tv coverage, etc.
What are some factors that affect who plays sport?
Gender, age, socio-economic group (e.g. middle class), ethnicity, disabilities.
What is deviance?
Behaviour that falls outside the norms or what is thought to be acceptable; goes against the moral values or laws of the sport.
What is negative deviance?
Deviance that has a detrimental effect.
What is positive deviance?
Deviance where there is no intention to cause harm or break the rules.
What is media?
The main means of mass communication (television, radio, internet, etc.
What is sportsmanship?
Qualities of fairness, following the rules, being gracious in defeat or victory.
What is gamesmanship?
Bending the rules/laws of a sport without actually breaking them.
What is the difference between gamesmanship and deviance?
Gamesmanship is bending the rules of a sport to benefit your performance. Whereas, deviance is behaviour that is thought to be unacceptable and goes against the laws of the sport.
