Why do we refer to planes and axes of movement?
To describe the direction and characteristics of movements used in different sports.
What do planes do?
Planes divide the human body into sections.
What are the three types of planes of movement?
1) Sagittal plane.
2) Frontal plane.
3) Transverse plane.
What is a frontal axis?
An imaginary line passing horizontally through the body from left to right, allows flexion and extension.
What is a vertical axis?
An imaginary line passing vertically through the body, allows rotation of the body in an upright position.
What is a sagittal axis?
An imaginary line passing horizontally through the body from front to back, allows abduction and adduction.
What is an axis?
An imaginary straight line around which something turns.
What plane and axis would a gymnast use to do a forward roll or somersault (front flip)?
It is a movement in the sagittal plane around the frontal axis.
What axes and plane will you use in a cartwheel?
Frontal plane around the sagittal axis.
