Muscle Fibres and muscle contractions Flashcards
What is an isometric muscle contraction?
A muscle contraction that has no change in joint angle and muscle length.
What is an isotonic muscle contraction?
A muscle contraction when the muscle length changes as it contracts and causes movement.
What are the two types of isotonic muscle contractions?
Concentric.
Eccentric.
What is a concentric contraction?
When muscles SHORTEN as muscle fibres contract.
What is an eccentric contraction?
When the muscles LENGTHEN as muscle fibres contract.
Give an example of a concentric contraction.
The upward (lifting) phase of a biceps curl.
Give an example of an eccentric contraction.
The downward (lowering) phase of a biceps curl.
What are the three types of muscle fibres?
Type I.
Type IIA.
Type IIB.
For type I, what is the…
Speed of contraction (high/low/medium)?
Resistance to fatigue (very/etc)?
Amount of force produced?
Slow speed of contraction.
Very resistant to fatigue.
Low force produced.
For type IIA, what is the…
Speed of contraction (high/low/medium)?
Resistance to fatigue (very/etc)?
Amount of force produced?
Fast speed of contraction.
More prone to fatigue than type I.
Medium force produced.
For type IIB, what is the…
Speed of contraction (high/low/medium)?
Resistance to fatigue (very/etc)?
Amount of force produced?
Extremely fast muscle contraction.
Rapid fatigue.
High force produced.
Give a sporting example for Type I fibres.
Marathon runner.
Give a sporting example for type IIA fibres.
800m runner.
Give a sporting example for type IIB fibres.
100m runner.
