Joints Flashcards
What is a joint?
A joint is where two or more bones meet.
Why are joints important?
Joints are important for movement and rotation.
What are the four types of joints?
Hinge joint
Ball and socket joint
Condyloid joint
Pivot joint
What is a pivot joint and what movements occur at the pivot joint?
Pivot joints allow bones to rotate. There are 2 pivot joints in your body: in your wrist and neck.
How can a pivot joint aid a performance?
When doing shot put, the pivot joint allows your bones to rotate.
What is the definition of a hinge joint?
A hinge joint is a joint that allows only backward and forward motion. There are three hinge joints: the knee, the elbow and the ankle.
What bones are moving at the hinge joint when we flex and extend our knee?
The tibia is hinged on the femur so that the leg can be bent (flexion) or straightened (extension).
What are examples of ball and socket joints?
In the hip, the long femur fits into the pelvis. In the shoulder, the long humerus fits into the scapula.
What is a ball and socket joint?
When the rounded head of a long bone (the ball) fits into a cup-shaped hole (the socket).
Why is the ball and socket joint useful in sport?
In cricket, the ball and socket joint allows you to bowl the ball with a range of movement.
What is a condyloid joint?
A condyloid joint is similar to a ball and socket joint, but the ball rests against the end of a bone, rather than inside a socket.
What is an example of a condyloid joint?
The wrist is an example because you can bend it (flexion) and straighten it (extension), but you can also turn your hand inwards (adduction) and outwards (abduction).
Why is the condyloid joint important in sport?
The condyloid joint allows a bowler in cricket to spin the ball and make it harder for the batsman.
