Musculo-Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the musculo-skeletal system?
The musculo-skeletal system includes all the bones in the body. Attached to the skeleton is a muscular system. Working together, the joints, bones and skeletal muscles of the body comprise.
What is the musculo-skeletal system used for in sport?
The musculo-skeletal system provides stability, posture and protection.
What are the five functions of the skeleton for sport?
Protection, blood cell production, joints for movement, muscle attachment and storing minerals.
How does our skeleton protects our vital organs?
The skull protects the brain, the spine protects the spinal cord, and the ribs protect the internal organs, including your heart. These bones act as cages around important body parts.
What’s the benefit of muscle attachment in relation to sport?
The muscles you use in sport need strong points to attach to. Bones provide that framework. The muscles are attached by tendons.
Why are joints important in sport?
Joints let the body make a variety of movements (kicking a football). Joints work together with bones and muscles to form levers.
Why is mineral storage important for sport?
Calcium and phosphorus maintain the strong and healthy bones that you need for exercise. Food examples: cheese, yogurt, milk, etc.
Why is red and white blood cell production important?
Bone marrow makes most of the cells of the blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Bone marrow responds to your activity and condition to keep you in good shape.
