What are anabolic steroids?
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone and muscles growth.
What are the side effects of taking anabolic steroids?
Increased risk of muscle injury, high blood pressure, very aggressive behaviour.
What are beta blockers?
Drugs that are used to control the heart rate and having a calming and relaxing effect.
What are the benefits of taking beta blockers?
Beta blockers can help targets sports where steadiness and precision are required, because they reduce heart rate.
What are the side effects of taking beta blockers?
Nausea, diarrhoea, insomnia.
What are narcotics?
Drugs that affect mood or behaviour, inducing drowsiness and relieving pain.
What is an analgesic drug?
A painkilling, or pain relieving drug.
What are the benefits of taking narcotics and analgesics?
These drugs act by depressing the central nervous system and it gives relief from painful injuries, but they allow the injured player to take part, they can increase the risk of severe or long-lasting injury.
What are diuretics?
Drugs that elevate the rate of urine production.
What are the benefits of taking diuretics?
It can help performers who need to lose weight. They also may be used to reduce the concentration of any other banned substance that may be present in the urine.
What are the side effects of taking diuretics?
Dehydration, which can cause dizziness, headaches and nausea.
What are the side effects of taking narcotics and analgesics?
Loss of co-ordination, loss of balance, loss of concentration.
What are peptide hormones?
Increases the rate of maturation of red blood cells
What are the benefits of taking peptide hormones?
Increase muscle growth, assist in recovery from injury and heavy training sessions. Allows the body to carry extra oxygen, and disperse waste products and lactic acid.
